X-Ray Tulips
Drawing inspiration from the work of Albert Koetsier, this 8' x 8' painting was created using clear coat and black fabric dye on unbleached muslin. When lit from the front, it is a striking black and white composition.
When back-lit, the painting transluces to reveal red tulips. I color the flowers without the red bleeding through the black and white of the original piece, I created a blend of clear coat, pigment, and dye.
An unexpected (but pleasant) result of mixing the clear coat and dyes caused the translucency to behave more like a gel than a pigment, enabling a vibrant ranges of colors and interactions with light.
